ComingSoon is debuting an exclusive Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World teaser trailer from the short documentary by director Julio Palacio. The film is set to premiere on Sunday, January 21st at 2:45 PM as part of the 2024 Slamdance Film Festival in the UnStoppable Shorts. It is taking place at The Yarrow in Theater A.
“Makayla, a black teenage girl, has spent her life grappling with a rare form of autism that rendered her essentially nonverbal,” reads the documentary’s description. “However, her parents, filled with unwavering belief in their daughter’s potential, embarked on a transformative journey to discover the true depth of Makayla’s inner world. Eight months ago, a groundbreaking breakthrough came into their lives in the form of letter board therapy, a method that finally provided Makayla with the means to communicate. As her voice gradually emerges, the audience is invited into a world of wonder, poetry, and brilliance that was once hidden from sight.”

Who is producing Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World?
Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World was directed, written and produced by Julio Palacio. It is also produced by Sam Hanson and Sasha Levinson. The film’s editor is Jeff Jay and its cinematography was done by Brock Hanson.
The film features Grammy-winning and diamond-selling hip hop producer Needlz and his daughter Makayla.
