STXfilms has dropped the official National Champions trailer for Ric Roman Waugh’s forthcoming sports drama film, starring Golden Globe nominee Stephan James and Oscar winner J.K. Simmons. The video, which you can check out below, features a rising star quarterback as he risk his future NFL career leading a player strike in hopes of getting fair compensation for all college football players.
The film is scheduled to make its debut in theaters on Friday, December 10, pitting it against three high-profile competitors in the form of Amazon’s Being the Ricardos, 20th Century Studios’ West Side Story, and Netflix’s Don’t Look Up.

National Champions is directed by Ric Roman Waugh from a screenplay written by Adam Mervis, based on his stage play of the same name. The film stars Stephan James, J.K. Simmons, Alexander Ludwig, Lil Rel Howery, Tim Blake Nelson, Andrew Bachelor, Jeffrey Donovan, David Koechner, Kristin Chenoweth, Timothy Olyphant, and Uzo Aduba.
“Three days before the college football national championship game, star quarterback LeMarcus James and teammate Emmett Sunday ignite a player’s strike declaring they won’t compete until all student-athletes are fairly compensated,” reads the synopsis. “With billions of dollars at risk and legacies on the line, the stakes could not be higher. Now, with only hours until kickoff, the head coach and various power brokers must race against the clock.”
