Walt Disney Studios and Pixar have released a brand new Luca featurette for their newest coming-of-age animated film, featuring the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Maya Rudolph. The video features interviews from the creative team and cast including director Enrico Casarosa as they give us a behind-the-scenes look at the process of building the world of Luca. It also highlights the animated film’s fictional town of Portorosso, which aims to capture the wonderful nostalgic look of Italian summers.

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Luca is a fun and heartwarming story about friendship and stepping out of your comfort zone with two teenage sea monsters who experience a life-changing summer. This coming-of-age adventure centers around one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta, and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.

The animated film will feature the voices of Jacob Tremblay as Luca Paguro, a bright and inventive 13-year-old sea monster with endless curiosity; Jack Dylan Grazer as Alberto Scorfano, a free-spirited teenage sea monster with unbridled enthusiasm for the human world; Emma Berman as Giulia, an outgoing and charming adventurer who befriends Luca and Alberto; Maya Rudolph as Luca’s mother Daniela, Marco Barricelli as Giulia’s father Massimo, and Jim Gaffigan as Luca’s father’s Lorenzo.

Luca is directed by Italian filmmaker Enrico Casarosa in his feature-length directorial debut with Andrea Warren (Lava, Cars 3) set as a producer. Casarosa, who has worked on iconic animated films such as Cars, Ratatouille, Up, The Good Dinosaur, Coco, and Incredibles 2, has been with Pixar since 2006 as a storyboard artist and writer.
Originally scheduled for a theatrical release, the film is now slated for a Disney+ premiere on Friday, June 18, with no extra fee, as a special offering to kick-off the summer season.
