‘Over Her Dead Body’ Movie Review (2008)

We have an early contender for worst movie of 2008. The fact that New Line screened this movie as early as they did is amazing and the fact that Eva Longoria was even willing to do press for this movie is a testament to just how bad her movie career really is. (I turned down that interview by the way.)

Over Her Dead Body is one of the absolutely worst movies I have seen in a long, long time and I would have preferred a flogging rather than to submit myself to this kind of torture ever again.

The film begins with Longoria playing the annoying fiancee Kate. It is her wedding day and she is marrying Henry played by Paul Rudd. As she bosses everyone around and is rude to everyone she meets as they prepare her lavish wedding ceremony she is ultimately crushed by an ice sculpture of which she deemed unacceptable because it was an angel without wings. Go figure, the angel without wings crushes her and kills her and off she goes to the afterlife where, you guessed it, she meets an angel without wings.

As she plays the bitch role with the angel she is ultimately shuffled back off to earth as a ghost with no idea as to the reason why. She ultimately decides it is to stop Henry from hooking up with Ashley played by one-time “Boston Legal” star Lake Bell. Ashley is a psychic and the only one that can actually see Kate, who ends up annoying Ashley and the audience to the point that Ashley gives up on any kind of relationship with Henry and the audience gives up any kind of attempt to like this film. Honestly, if a character is so annoying that she pisses off the people in the movie what do the filmmakers think it is going to do to the audience? We don’t look at annoying as funny, we look at annoying as annoying, and Eva Longoria is one of the most annoying actresses and public figures we have out there today.

The film goes on from that point as Kate must learn the real reasons she has been sent back to earth and it proves to be as pointless as you may have assumed. Actually, let me spoil it for you. (Highlight the following text if you are going to take my advice and skip this flick.) As it turns out she had to go back to make sure Henry would be happy, which he was with Ashley so she has to end up getting them back together. This is something that never would have needed to happen had she not been sent back to earth in the first place.

One thing I have yet to reveal is the stupid side plot and miscommunication that goes on as well as the terrible addition of Jason Biggs as Ashley’s assistant in her side job as a caterer. Yeah, this film is a mess on every level and from every angle. New Line must be hating themselves for even having to release it as they have had a shit storm of crap hit theaters lately and Be Kind Rewind looks like it will continue that trend along with about 75% of the rest of their 2008 slate.

Over Her Dead Body is just the latest in terrible romantic comedies to hit the big screen, and I can only pray something is done about this awful trend. What happened to films like Love, Actually and You’ve Got Mail? Is it wishful thinking to think that a new romantic comedy can come in and actually secure the number one spot at the box-office for longer than a weekend?

One final comment, please end Eva Longoria’s career once and for all by not supporting this film in any fashion. Let her career die with “Desperate Housewives” and let us hear nothing more from her as Tony Parker will soon need to end his career with the Spurs due to injury.
