Commissioned by the Kazakh Ministry of Information to report back to his home country of Kazakhstan his documented findings as he tours the “U. S. and A.”, Kazakhstani reporter Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) embarks on his mission, but the States can be quite seductive. His educational and informational mission soon gets side-tracked after a late night of television and an appearance by Pamela Anderson as CJ during a rerun of “Baywatch.” Now the mission is Pamela and marriage to the buxom lifeguard. Borat and his producer, Azamat Bagatov (Ken Davitian) make way for California from New York and a mission of madness ensues.
Borat is funny, at times hilarious, at times gross, at times borderline gay porn and with that said I am not quite sure what audience is going to like this. Okay, so I know college kids and open-minded thirty-somethings will love this movie. Another way of finding the audience it is safe to say that if you liked Jackass then you are going to like Borat because while Borat is not a movie that bounces around from sketch to sketch it may as well be. The only thing stringing this story together are some shots of Borat and his producer driving their $700 used ice-cream truck cross-country with a bear in the back, seriously. I don’t say this to devalue the comedy or tactic of this movie, only to give you an idea of what you are in for, because when Borat isn’t driving he is involving himself in some crazy shit.
Sacha Baron Cohen made his most notable screen debut this summer as the French NASCAR driver in Columbia Pictures’ comedy Talladega Nights but with Borat it is a whole new breed. Whether he is chasing his obese producer naked through the hallways of four star hotels, shitting in plastic bags and bringing it to the dinner table, causing riots at Midwest rodeos or asking how much the “pussy magnet” in a new Hummer costs you can be sure he is up to something and it does not stop until the final frame.
Borat will have you laughing your ass off, but this is a comedy that will most likely not be received well between the coasts, perhaps that is why it is opening in only 800 theaters across the country. Nevertheless, if you have an open mind and a desire to laugh Borat will not disappoint. However, if you are offended easily or at all then just stay home. Why go to the theater and ruin the experience for others? And believe me, this is an experience.
