RT Features has confirmed that Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz (Vicki Cristina Barcelona), Coco star Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) and Narcos’ Wagner Moura have officially joined the cast of director Oliver Assayas’ spy drama Wasp Network.
The film will reunite Cruz with American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace co-star Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Edgar Ramirez (The Girl on the Train, Hands of Stone) along with Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Kingsman: The Golden Circle) who is also set to star in Wasp Network.
Wasp Network is the unbelievable true story of Cuban spies in American territory during the ’90s which reveals the tentacles of a terrorist network based in Florida with ramifications in Central America and with the consent of the US government. Assayas (Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria) wrote and will also direct the film, which is based on Fernando Morais’ book, The Last Soldiers of the Cold War.
RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira is producing alongside CG Cinema’s Charles Gillibert. RT’s Lourenço Sant’Anna and Sophie Mas are executive producing. IMR International will be introducing the film to foreign buyers in Cannes, with CAA Media Finance handling the US rights.
Cruz is best known for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona as Maria Elena which earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Bernal is known for his voicing role in Disney‘s Coco as Hector Rivera. He recently wrapped up his last season on the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle for the role of Rodrigo which earned him a Golden Globe in 2016. Moura is best known for his role as Pablo Escobar in Netflix‘s Narcos.
