Matt Damon Eyes George Clooney’s The Monuments Men

Matt Damon is the latest name said to be in talks to join the all-star cast of George Clooney’s next directorial effort, The Monuments Men, Deadline reports. Damon would join a cast that includes Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin, John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville, Bob Balaban and Clooney himself.

Adapted by Clooney and his long-time partner Grant Heslov from Robert M. Edsel’s book “The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History,” the drama takes place during the final days of Nazi Germany as Adolf Hitler and the Nazis try to cover their tracks by destroying all the artwork they had stolen during their rise to power, as a group of art historians and museum curators try to rescue those works of art.

Clooney will start shooting The Monuments Men on March 1 in Europe, co-producing with Heslov for Smokehouse with much of the same crew from Ben Affleck’s Argo, which they produced, including composer Alexadre Desplat.

Sony will be releasing the movie domestically after making the movie in a co-production deal with 20th Century Fox.
