Deadline reports that Patrick Osborne (Imaginary Mary, Feast) has been tapped by Paramount and Weed Road Pictures to develop and direct an adaptation of Monument Valley.
The focus of the film adaptation will be to send modern-day live-action characters into a surreal animated world similar to the world of the original game. The goal would be to create a live-action/CG hybrid family franchise.
Monument Valley is an indie puzzle game developed and published by Ustwo Games. In the first incarnation of the game, players must lead the princess Ida through mazes of optical illusions and impossible objects while manipulating the world around her to reach various platforms. In Monument Valley II, the story focuses on a mother and child in the same universe as the original game embark on a journey of discovery through a stunning and impossible world. Players are taken through constantly changing landscapes, mechanics that surprise at every turn, and get to witness how the relationship between parent and child evolve throughout the course of the game.
Akiva Goldsman is producing and Paramount President of Production Elizabeth Raposo and Weed Road President of Production Greg Lessans will oversee. They are currently in the process of finding a screenwriter who can assist Osborne in adapting the popular mobile game to film.
The game has over 160 million downloads worldwide and awards include the Apple Design Award 2014, Apple iPad Game of the Year, and two BAFTAs for Best British Game and Best Mobile & Handheld Game.
