Variety reports that Mid90s star Alexa Demie has been cast to join A24‘s musical drama Waves. In addition to Demie, Emmy Award-winner Sterling K. Brown (This is Us, Hotel Artemis, The Predator), Lucas Hedges (Lady Bird, Boy Erased), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Assassination Nation) and Taylor Russell (Lost in Space) are also set to star in the film.

Waves is described as a musical drama about teenage life, focusing on two young couples as they navigate the emotional minefield of growing up and falling in love. Much like Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, Waves will be almost entirely synchronized to music, with a mix of contemporary songs and a score by Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Gone Girl).
The film is the brainchild of writer-director Trey Edward Shults, who hit big on the horror scene last year with It Comes at Night. Waves is written and directed by Shults and will be produced by Kevin Turen and Jim Wilson. The dramatic musical film will be the third project of Shults with the independent film studio A24 (Hereditary, Eighth Grade, Hot Summer Nights, The Children Act) which will soon start filming in Florida.
Demie will next be seen in Jonah Hill’s directorial debut film Mid90s, a coming-of-age drama about a 13-year-old boy in the 1990s-era. The film will have its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.
