With Marvel Studios gearing up to finally give Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow the solo film she deserves, the powers that be are already cooking up a shortlist of female filmmakers to take the helm. According to Deadline, one such filmmaker is Cate Shortland, who the outlet claims is the one to watch to potentially get the high profile job. Shortland is an Australian helmer whose three features include the 2004 romance Somersault with Sam Worthington, the 2012 historical drama Lore and 2017’s psychological horror thriller Berlin Syndrome starring Teresa Palmer.
Jac Schaeffer (Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, The Hustle) is currently penning the script for the film. Scarlett Johansson most recently reprised the role of Natasha Romanov, a.k.a. Black Widow, in the this summer’s biggest blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War. She along with all of the core Avengers (Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America and presumably Hawkeye) survived the events of that film and are all expected to be seen in next summer’s still-untitled Avengers 4.
