A few weeks ago, Paramount Pictures announced that noted TV director S.J. Clarkson (Heroes, Dexter, Jessica Jones) will direct the fourth installment in the Star Trek movie reboot series, making history as the first female director of the film franchise. Now, while doing promo for the film Terminal, Scotty actor Simon Pegg has spoken exclusively with ComingSoon.net about his thoughts on working with Clarkson on the next Trek, cleared up confusion about his developing a script for the installment, and his thoughts on his friend Quentin Tarantino’s Trek film currently in development as well.
Written by J.D. Payne (Godzilla vs. Kong) and Patrick McKay (Beyond), the upcoming sequel will reportedly follow Kirk as he encounters his father in a time travel incident, with Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok) set to reprise his role from the 2009 reboot.
While this entry will undergo production first, Paramount has confirmed that they are still developing the Quentin Tarantino entry into the franchise for a future installment.
ComingSoon.net: Are you excited about S.J. Clarkson finally breaking the glass ceiling as director on the next “Trek” movie?
Simon Pegg: Oh yeah, that’s just great. I’m thrilled about that, it’s gonna be fantastic. It’s belated, but it’s very welcome.
CS: Are they utilizing the script you and Doug Jung developed? I know there are multiple scripts they’re developing.
Pegg: You know what, I’m not developing the next “Star Trek” at all. I think that’s a bit of confusion because I’m working on something with Doug at Bad Robot but it’s not the next “Trek.”
CS; Oh okay, so that was just media confusion.
Pegg: Yeah yeah, that’s just crossed wires. The script for 4 is being written by Payne and McKay and then also obviously Quentin [Tarantino] turned up at the office a couple of months ago and said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea!” So that’s in the hope for further down the line. It’s a good time for “Star Trek,” I think.
CS: You’re pals with Quentin. Have you had a chance to chat with him and be like, “Oh, are there gonna be Red Apple Cigarettes?”
Pegg: (laughs) Everyone sort of assumes it’s gonna be like “Pulp Fiction” in space, but I think his devotion to “Trek” and his understanding of it… It won’t be ordinary, it’ll have him all over it, but it won’t be anything a “Star Trek” fan will have to worry about. He has an acute understanding of the story and he’d never do anything to tear it down. I haven’t read the treatment yet, but I might be able to in the next couple of weeks, so I’m excited about that.
