According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren are set to star in the New Line Cinema thriller The Good Liar, to be directed by Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Dreamgirls). This will mark McKellen’s fourth collaboration with Condon after Gods and Monsters, Mr. Holmes and Beauty and the Beast.
Based on the novel by Nicholas Searle, The Good Liar follows a career con artist named Roy Courtnay (McKellen) who attempts one last big score after meeting a wealthy widow named Betty McLeish (Mirren) online. However, once Betty opens her heart to Roy he finds himself caring about her in a way that threatens his planned swindle.
Condon will direct from a screenplay by Jeffrey Hatcher, with whom he worked on adapting Mr. Holmes. Greg Yolen will also produce, with Jack Morrissey along with Bron Creative’s Aaron L. Gilbert and Jason Cloth executive producing.
Condon was previously attached to Universal’s Bride of Frankenstein redo, but that project appears to be on the back burner at the studio along with their entire planned Dark Universe slate.
