In two separate items, Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has given the green light to All You Need Is Kill and that Columbia Pictures is moving forward with The Equalizer.
The Doug Liman-directed All You Need Is Kill will star Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. It is currently prepping in London. The project is based on the Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka which is described as follows:
There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again… When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the B*tch of War. Is the B*tch the key to Keiji’s escape, or to his final death?
The Equalizer, meanwhile, is an adaptation of the hit 1980s TV series that starred Edward Woodward. Columbia Pictures has received a script by Richard Wenk and has set an April 8 start date for the project, which will star Denzel Washington. Deadline says:
“Washingtons deal is being closed right now and Im told hell be getting his customary $20 million price, but that this is a smartly budget thriller that will come in around $50 million and is designed to launch the first franchise for the actor. Now, directors are lining up for the job. Ive heard names on the studios list that include Pierre Morel, Nicolas Winding Refn, Gavin OConnor and Gareth Evans.”
