Sony Pictures is presenting three of the studio’s upcoming sci-fi films at the San Diego Comic-Con, including:
Total Recall – Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Doug Quaid (Colin Farrell), the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his ordinary existence. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate. Based on Philip K. Dick’s classic story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” this brand new take on some of his most visionary ideas is directed by Len Wiseman, who will join stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, and Bryan Cranston on stage.
Looper – In the futuristic action thriller, time travel will be invented-but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper”-a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)-is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good…until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. Writer/director Rian Johnson will join Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt to discuss the film.
Elysium – Ever since writer-director Neill Blomkamp broke through with his first feature film, District 9, people have been wondering what he has in store for an encore. The studio will present a first look at his new movie as stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster join Neill and producer Simon Kinberg on stage.

Silas Lesnick: We seem him fighting Beckinsale’s Lori and she delivers her “I give good wife,” line.
4:50
Comment From Ashlee
is there anyway to livestream with video? I really watch this! =)
4:50
ComingSoon.net: They don’t allow sites to video in Hall H, sorry.
4:50
Silas Lesnick: Quaid finds something implanted in his hand and pulls it out. Some kind of a data disc.
4:51
Silas Lesnick: We see Quaid trying to get through airport security in a holographic disguise. It flickers off as they catch him
4:52
Silas Lesnick: There’s lots of scenes of the police force robots
4:52
Silas Lesnick: One scene has Quaid leaping into an elevator as the robot arm grabs at him. It gets cut off completely by the elevator door and writhes on the ground
4:53
Silas Lesnick: “It’s amazing what they can do,” says Farrell, “We were just in a green room on apple boxes!”
4:54
Silas Lesnick: The moderator jokes, “Kate, you’re the worst wife ever.”

Silas Lesnick: She says, “I’ve heard that before!”
4:55
Silas Lesnick: She jokes that she was offended that her husband, Wiseman, decided to pick her for the role

Silas Lesnick: Bryan jokes that he found the role very physical and, if it was physical for him, he can’t imagine what the rest of the cast went through
4:56
Silas Lesnick: Biel is talking about getting trained in Parkour and lots and lots of boxing
4:57
EDouglasCS: Oh sh*t… look who is in the house!!!!
4:57
EDouglasCS: First time in Hall H this con… been mainly doing interviews all day.
4:57
Silas Lesnick: With that, I’ll turn the floor over to Mr. Ed Douglas!
4:57
EDouglasCS: Wait, what? No, keep going, Silas… I need to acclimate 🙂
4:58
Silas Lesnick: They’re turning the panel over to audience questions
4:58
EDouglasCS: I did get a chance to see the footage and it all looks great!
4:58
Silas Lesnick: The first question is about the focus of the film: action, humor or mystey?
4:58
Silas Lesnick: Len says that it’s a mystery first and foremost
4:59
Silas Lesnick: “I love the mystery and the fact that the mystery is a character itself really drew me in.”
5:00
Silas Lesnick: Colin jokes that he’s spent so much of his life not knowing who he is so playing Quaid came easy.
5:00
Comment From jugraf
why hiiding the 3 boobs woman in the reboot !!! Why ?! it’s a big mistake !
5:00
ComingSoon.net: They’re not hiding her, she’s even at Comic-Con 🙂
https://comingsoon.preprod.vip.gnmedia.net/news/movienews.php?id=92527
5:01
Silas Lesnick: Kate says her character actually combines multiple characters from the Verhoeven version.
5:02
Silas Lesnick: She says that her character is very different from Sharon Stone’s
5:02
Silas Lesnick: Colin jokes that Kate was nervous at first because she was worried Len was actually remaking Verhoevens BASIC INSTINCT
5:02
EDouglasCS: The next question comes from someone very British.
5:03
Silas Lesnick: He’s asking about the role that Britain plays in the film
5:03
Silas Lesnick: He’s wondering if maybe England stands in for Mars — They don’t entirely answer though
5:03
EDouglasCS: Bryan Cranston already seems to be kind of loopy… i wonder how the Breaking Bad panel went earlier.
5:04
Comment From Ashlee
does that woman actually have 3 boobs?
5:04
EDouglasCS: The guy also asked Kate what she thought of the way Len portrayed England (she’s British, he’s not)
5:04
ComingSoon.net: Yes, Ashlee, she’s thinking about getting a fourth.
5:04
ComingSoon.net: I kid.
5:04
EDouglasCS: @ComingSoon.net That would be a great niche for a good plastic surgeon.
5:05
Silas Lesnick: Farrell says he thought about doing an Austrian accent as an homage to Arnold, but quickly reconsidered.
5:05
EDouglasCS: I want to go up to the mic and start crying so Kate Beckinsale will hug me like she did with one fan years ago
5:06
ComingSoon.net: Aren’t you still not allowed within 200 yards of her?
5:06
EDouglasCS: @ComingSoon.net I’ll take a 200-yard mimed hug.
5:06
EDouglasCS: I am literally sitting 200 yards from the stage for that reason 🙂
5:06
ComingSoon.net: Ah, makes sense.
5:07
EDouglasCS: Silas are you still here?
5:07
Silas Lesnick: Yep, but now I’m out! Have fun with the rest of the panel everybody!
5:08
EDouglasCS: Bryan Cranston said he was reticent to play a role that had been played by someone else before
5:08
ComingSoon.net: Thanks Silas!
5:08
Comment From CJohn
So, who is going to report all the news about Looper and Elysium?
5:08
ComingSoon.net: Ed’s in place.
5:08
EDouglasCS: He said that his character was a bit spoiled and wanted everyone to listen to him but that there were terrorists (revolutionaries) who is disrupting his master plan.
5:09
EDouglasCS: Asking Jessica what got her on board?
5:09
EDouglasCS: She said it was the “len spell” that got everyone on board.. and someone joked that everybody on the cast slept with Len (not just Kate)
5:09
EDouglasCS: She really wanted to help create a new Molina character for this movie… she thought she was capable and smart. Len wanted to create a love story amidst the mess between the two people
5:10
EDouglasCS: “That was the exciting and terrifying challenge” she says
5:10
EDouglasCS: @CJohn, I’ll be reporting on Looper/Elysium… already spoke with Rian Johnson and Matt Damon about them earlier.
5:11
EDouglasCS: @Ashlee asks if they’ve talked about Kate and Jessica’s fight … no, not yet
5:11
EDouglasCS: Colin says again that this isn’t played as comedically and he doesn’t have one-liners but that falls on Kate’s shoulders.
5:12
EDouglasCS: @Ashlee asking a guy how Kate looks can only get one or two responses… I’m sure she looks great on her worst day! 🙂
5:12
EDouglasCS: Moderator asking about the love story in the movie while making sure the story is getting told
5:13
EDouglasCS: “There’s such a romantic notion that amidst all the action at such a fast pace, that these two will find each other again and that the quest that the other person you’ve been dreaming about, that that possibly could be real. I was taken by that.”
5:14
EDouglasCS: “Because that’s what happened to you, honey,” Kate responds.
5:16
EDouglasCS: Check check
5:16
EDouglasCS: Okay, I’m back… sorry got knocked out and missed a couple questions.
5:17
EDouglasCS: Colin is talking about being on some of the sets and he said that being on one of the sets was like being in an opium den “so I felt right at home”
5:17
EDouglasCS: so that’s it for the Total Recall panel.. sorry, we had some technical difficulties there
5:18
Comment From mars
noticed that badtaste.it is quicker and has pictures on their live blog
5:18
EDouglasCS: Sorry @mars… see above
5:18
EDouglasCS: Next up is Looper, the new movie from Rian Johnson, the direct
5:19
EDouglasCS: Rian is the director of Brothers Bloom
5:19
EDouglasCS: Introducing director Rian Johnson
5:19
EDouglasCS: Next out is Emily BLunt
5:19
EDouglasCS: And the film’s star Joseph Gordon Levitt who got a huge round of applause!
5:20
EDouglasCS: Bruce Willis couldn’t make it to Comic-Con because he’s in Eastern Europe doing Die Hard
5:20
EDouglasCS: Rian talks about how he came up with the idea for Looper
5:20
EDouglasCS: “I came up with the idea bout ten years ago when I was reading a lot of PHilip K. Dick”
5:21
EDouglasCS: “I had the idea for a mob in the future who kills people by sending them back in time”
5:21
EDouglasCS: “It deals with an assassin who comes face to face with his future self”
5:21
EDouglasCS: Joseph plays a character named Joe… that character was written specifically for him by Rian (who directed Joseph in Brick)
5:22
EDouglasCS: Joe’s a looper… and it’s too difficult to kill people in the future so they send them back in time for a looper to kill them.
5:22
EDouglasCS: They send Joe his future self to kill who is played by Bruce Willis
5:22
EDouglasCS: Emily Blunt can’t say much about her character Sarah. “She and her family get embroiled in this whole debacle”
5:23
EDouglasCS: Blunt says she’s a badass living in the middle of nowhere in the MidWest
5:23
EDouglasCS: “It was a very exciting role to play.”
5:23
EDouglasCS: Showing a four or five minute reel
5:28
EDouglasCS: Footage looked awesome… it was basically an extended version of the trailer.
5:28
EDouglasCS: “How did you get Joe to look like Bruce Willis?”
5:29
EDouglasCS: Rian: “after we cast Bruce we thought uh oh, they don’t look anything alike.” So Bruce Willis was in the make-up chair for three hours
5:29
EDouglasCS: Sorry, Joe was in the make-up chair
5:29
EDouglasCS: The footage included more of Jeff Daniels’ character who is Joe’s handler… he has a thick and long grey beard.
5:30
EDouglasCS: Also saw more of the ‘face-off’ between Joe and Bruce Willis in the diner
5:30
EDouglasCS: @CJOhn I don’t believe Bruce Willis was there… just ARnie and Sly
5:30
EDouglasCS: Joe said he doesn’t do good impressions and isn’t a good mimic which made it harder for him to play a younger Bruce Willis. Emily Blunt is giving him a hard time and asking Joe to do his British accent.
5:30
EDouglasCS: He sounds like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins
5:31
EDouglasCS: Footage looked great… lots of action but it seems like a really rich story
5:31
EDouglasCS: Joe is talking about working with Bruce, saying he’s a “Super-cool guy… he’s a sweetheart and he loved this job”
5:31
EDouglasCS: Joe also said he was a fan of Bruce as well.
5:32
EDouglasCS: Moderator asking Rian about what made him think of Joseph to play a looper… and he said that he did it because he wanted to work with his friend again. (Joe starred in Rian’s first movie Brick)
5:32
EDouglasCS: Asking Emily why she got involved… she says it was after reading 30 pages of the script.
5:33
EDouglasCS: “I read it a few times before I met Rian because it’s rich in complexity and in the emotion of the piece.”
5:33
EDouglasCS: Emily Blunt: “he writes in such a singular way and it’s not derived from anything else you’ve seen”
5:33
EDouglasCS: BTW, I’d like to take pictures but it’s hard to do that and type up what’s being talked about in the panel.
5:34
EDouglasCS: Oh man… breaking news that Sly Stallone’s son was just found dead of an overdose… I hope that didn’t happen in San Diego
5:35
EDouglasCS: First question comes from the Asian twins who always come to Comic-Con
5:35
EDouglasCS: They ask Joe what the best part of working with Emily blunt. Joe: “She makes me laugh all the time because let’s face it, most pretty girls aren’t funny”
5:35
EDouglasCS: Joe: “We just had a great time”
5:36
EDouglasCS: Next question is to Joe about something he learned about collaborating with Bruce Willis
5:37
EDouglasCS: He said that he was impressed by how soft-spoken Bruce was and that he didn’t have to raise his voice to have a presence
5:37
EDouglasCS: Emily is telling a story about Bruce being covered in blood and he saw her in the sun and was worried about her “pale British skin” so he came over with a parasol to protect her from the sun while covered in blood
5:38
EDouglasCS: Joe being asked about getting through working with an icon. “As soon as you get working because once you do that, none of that other sh*t matters anymore.”
5:38
EDouglasCS: Joe: “He was really into the work, you can tell he put a lot of thought into what he was trying to do. to see him get excited and passionate about working drew me right in. ”
5:39
EDouglasCS: Joe being asked about how he does all his independent stuff like hitRECORD from his big movies
5:40
EDouglasCS: I got some pictures of Joseph Gordon Levitt but can’t post them while tweeting
5:40
EDouglasCS: Joe says that he considers all that stuff as the same thing, whether it’s a little independent film or some big studio movie
5:40
EDouglasCS: He just plugged Dark Knight Rises and he says that Christopher Nolan has a similar sensibility
5:41
EDouglasCS: Next question is to Joe asking about becoming the character both mentally and physically
5:41
EDouglasCS: Joe: “I didn’t work out for sh*t on this movie”
5:42
EDouglasCS: Emily says it’s always a challenge whether you have to portray someone else like what Joe has to do… she says that she didn’t think Joe did a cheap impersonation of Bruce but embodied the personality.
5:42
EDouglasCS: Emily says it was difficult for her because she was playing someone who is nothing like herself. “The hardest thing was having to learn how to chop wood convincingly”
5:42
Comment From sandlou
You’re doing a great job! Pictures would be great – but the dialogue is more interesting for now. Can’t wait for Elysium!
5:43
EDouglasCS: Moderator asking Rian about doing a bigger movie like Looper compared to his indie films
5:43
EDouglasCS: “At the end of the day, whether you’re making a movie with your video camera and friends or doing a movie like Looper, the process is essentially the same”
5:43
EDouglasCS: Thanks sandlot… I can’t wait for Elysium either!! Matt Damon was awesome in my interview… can’t wait to post that.
5:44
EDouglasCS: Next question is to Joe and Emily: “Of all the projects you’ve done which has been the most challenging and the most fun”
5:44
EDouglasCS: Emily says Looper has been the best movie she’s been a part of and felt she was lucky to be in it.
5:44
EDouglasCS: Emily “The most challenging was The Adjustment Bureau cause I had to learn how to dance and that was a fresh new hell every day”
5:45
Comment From Dave
I agree with sandlou, thanks so much.
5:45
EDouglasCS: @Dave Thanks! @TetraVaal Didn’t speak to Neil this time… just Matt Damon (isn’t that enough?) and producer Simon Kinberg
5:45
EDouglasCS: I wish I knew who this moderator was… he keeps interrupting with his own questions
5:46
EDouglasCS: Joe said that this movie was physically challenging between the hours of make-up and trying to be Bruce Willis
5:46
Comment From sandlou
I can’t wait for you to post that interview either. Will it be posted soon? You must love your job…but you must be soooo busy this week. Your blog is great!
5:46
EDouglasCS: @Sandlou Hopefully tonight or tomorrow
5:47
EDouglasCS: Last question was so esoteric I’m not sure I understood it.
5:48
EDouglasCS: These are some really intelligent questions… next one to Rian about working with Joe on Brick and then working on Looper which seems different
5:49
EDouglasCS: Rian: “When you write you spend all this time in your room by yourself… writing is not fun and you’re dying for a collaboration so to have great actors like these guys to bounce off and to have them surprise you…”
5:49
EDouglasCS: Rian was excited to have Emily in the movie because she surprised him on every day.
5:50
EDouglasCS: There’s an interesting aspect of Looper called “Closing your loop” which is basically making sure there’s no loose ends when you kill someone. I think this is going to be a very cool movie
5:51
EDouglasCS: First out is director Neill Blomkamp (District 9)
5:51
EDouglasCS: Next up Elysium!!!
5:51
EDouglasCS: Wifi is really sloooooooooow
5:52
EDouglasCS: opens september 28 I believe.
5:52
EDouglasCS: Neill’s a big fan of Comic-Con and really wanted to debut some footage there.. Matt told me earlier that they’re going to have 7 minutes
5:52
EDouglasCS: Neil: “The idea of launching footage at Comic-Con is a true thing”
5:53
EDouglasCS: He really wanted to show the footage to the fans before anyone else and he said the visual FX are not even remotely done yet. (The movie opens out until March)
5:53
EDouglasCS: Showing footage first
5:54
Comment From afranco282
Elysium comes out 3/1/2013, Looper is 9/28/2013 just to clear things up
5:55
ComingSoon.net: Yes, the wifi messed up Ed’s post order.
5:55
Comment From CJohn
Looper is released in 2012
6:01
EDouglasCS: The footage looked amazing!
6:01
EDouglasCS: Basically Elysium is a space station where the wealthy can live with no poverty and they have machines that can keep them from ever having health problems
6:02
EDouglasCS: Matt Damon is a man on earth which is completely poor and diseased and overpopulated… he gets irradiated on his job and is going to die in five days so he has to get to Elysium
6:02
EDouglasCS: Lots of great footage of both Elysium which looks like paradise, very colorful and high-tech
6:02
EDouglasCS: On-hand are Sharlto Copley, Matt Damon and Jodi Foster, the latter two their first Comic-Con
6:03
EDouglasCS: Sharlto plays a bounty hunter who is hired to stop Matt Damon’s character from getting to Elysium
6:04
EDouglasCS: I believe Matt’s character is called Axel Coaster (?) and in order to get to Elysium, he meets up with a friend named Spider who convinces him to get an implant in his head and an ex-skeleton in order to kidnap an Elysium citizen played by Bill Fichtner
6:05
EDouglasCS: Jodie Foster is one of the higher ups at Elysium who discovers Matt’s attempted kidnapping and wants to stop him getting there
6:05
EDouglasCS: We saw a lot of footage of Matt fighting with Sharlto (who has a beard and looks to be dressed in heavy clothing)… there were some shoot-outs and some hand-to-hand fights between them.
6:05
EDouglasCS: Both Matt and Jodie said that they wanted to do the movie because they loved District 9 and wanted to work with Neill
6:06
EDouglasCS: Sharlto is happy to be back at Comic-Con “I’m not going to cry because my character has to look tough”
6:07
EDouglasCS: The footage really gave a good idea of the plot and Matt’s story arc.
6:08
EDouglasCS: @maddy_d asks about the look of the film… earth looks very gritty, a bit like the South Africa of District 9… Elysium is very colorful on the inside but it’s absolutely a huge space station, enormous… it looks pretty classic.
6:08
EDouglasCS: Oh, there’s also robots in the movie… we see that when Bill Fichtner’s character travels down to earth, he has two robot protectors who go after Matt when he tries to kidnap him
6:08
EDouglasCS: Also producer Simon Kinberg is on the panel
6:09
EDouglasCS: The exoskeleton that Matt wears looks pretty cool… it looks like his guns plug right into it.
6:11
EDouglasCS: at the beginning of the footage, we see how Matt’s character gets into an altercation with one of the robots and is sent to prison
6:11
EDouglasCS: BTW, Jodie Foster’s character has sort of a strange accent in the movie
6:11
EDouglasCS: First question is a general question about the challenges Matt and Jodie have faced as actors, not necessarily to do with the movie
6:12
EDouglasCS: Matt talks about asking Neill lots of questions about Elysium just to see if he can answer them… just facetiously, but Neill always had answers because he really thought a lot about this world and the look of it.
6:12
EDouglasCS: Next question for Sharlto asking about the transformation from being unknown to being a star
6:13
EDouglasCS: Sharlto jokes about playing Angelina Jolie’s love interest in Maleficent and his friends saying “No way, you play nerds!!”
6:14
EDouglasCS: Neil is being asked about how important it is to give the actors as much as possible in terms of sets and environments and he says there’s a lot of green screen.
6:14
EDouglasCS: Apparently Elysium is all green screen done on stages while the earth segments were shot in Mexico City. He says that the robots were played by stunt guys in suits and then replaced with CG
6:15
EDouglasCS: it seems very CG but even though he said the FX weren’t complete, I thought what we saw looked great and I’m not sure what he was talking about, saying that there was a lot of previs. Maybe the Elysium stuff was previs
6:16
EDouglasCS: Sharlto jokes that we should ask Neill and Peter Jackson to make a sequel to District 9 because he needs work.
6:16
EDouglasCS: Jodie asked about working in a green screen environment and she said it was fun
6:16
Comment From TetraVaal
Would you rank it above what was shown for Looper and Total Recall?
6:17
EDouglasCS: It was more on par with Total Recall.. a big science fiction movie. I thought it’s a nice counterpart to Total Recall.. there’s a similar idea of two very different worlds… one that’s poor and one that’s rich and traveling between the two
6:17
Comment From Angel
What about Wagner Moura’s character?
6:18
EDouglasCS: I believe Wagner was playing Spider who is sort of a guy in the underground who helps Matt Damon out… there is probably a bit of a revolutionary aspect (similar to Total Recall) where people on earth are fighting against the people on Elysium who have everything
6:18
Comment From maddy_d
was there an original soundtrack to accompany any of the scenes? and if so what did it sound like
6:18
EDouglasCS: Hard to tell… it was probably temp
6:19
EDouglasCS: Neill said that the pressure on the crew for this one were equal to that of District 9 because they were shooting in the slums of Mexico CIty.
6:19
EDouglasCS: They shot the Elysium scenes in Vancouver first so that the FX guys could get to the CG
6:19
Comment From brecook
Did the footage of the same awesome down and dirty look that District 9 had?
6:19
EDouglasCS: Yes.. it looks great… but only the earth stuff was gritty… the space station stuff was colorful and high tech and modern
6:19
Comment From TetraVaal
I know it’s hard to base an opinion off of 7 minutes of unfinished footage, but does it appear Blomkamp is avoiding a sophomore slump?
6:20
EDouglasCS: Yeah, I’d like to think so @TetraVaal.
6:20
EDouglasCS: Neill is talking about the terrors of shooting in Mexico City but that shooting down there made it look awesome even though they faced sandstorms and they had to shoot in a huge dump in which the dust was made of fecal matter… YuCK!
6:21
EDouglasCS: Matt is talking about being in the dump and helicopters coming through and blowing the dust all over them.
6:21
EDouglasCS: Really funny story about how Matt would be covered in the dust and Neill would come up in his respirator and say “But it looked great!”
6:21
Comment From Ben
I’ve heard from two different people that Elysium is amazing — there were rough cut screenings at sony early in the year. But i still dont understand what it’s about — Matt Damon gettin to a space station? that’s the logline?
6:22
EDouglasCS: @Ben Matt Damon is one of the people on earth living a tough life then he gets irradiated on the job and he has five days to get Elysium where he can be cured.
6:22
EDouglasCS: Oh!! Also Matt seems to work at a robot factory, just like Colin Farrell’s character in Total Recall! There are definitely lots of parallels.
6:22
Comment From sandlou
Blomkamp avoided a sophomore slump, yet it still looks like ‘Blomkamp’ work?
6:23
EDouglasCS: They’re telling funny horror stories about the stunt guy doing a stunt in that dump and being peed on by pigs
6:24
EDouglasCS: Matt Damon being asked about preparing for different roles like Good Will Hunting and Elysium
6:24
EDouglasCS: Matt: “Also being a writer, you first have a lot of lead time. I try to think objectively more of it being a magic trick. You have a group of people trying to create this magic trick. In case of whatever movie it is, me and Neill sat down and discussed what I need to accomplish this”
6:24
Comment From Ben
Is Matt Damon’s character a family man/married or a single guy? Wondering what his incentive is to live….
6:25
EDouglasCS: @Ben he seems to be single… and I guess his incentive to live is the same as anyone else might have. the footage did seem to make it seem like he might be bringing a little girl to Elysium too, so that might add motive
6:26
EDouglasCS: the panel seems to be almost over
6:26
Comment From maddy_d
did the action scenes take place on earth or in elysium?
6:26
ComingSoon.net: Sony Pictures usually has surprises.
6:27
EDouglasCS: Both Maddy…mostly on earth but I think Matt’s character figures out how to get to Elysium because he’s up there going through the halls and shooting things. I believe the conflict is between him and Sharlto/Jodie’s character
6:27
EDouglasCS: @ComingSoon Wishful thinking 🙂
6:27
Comment From Dylan
Is Peter Jackson involved with the Production again? You mentioned previs, does that mean WETA is doing the effects too?
6:28
EDouglasCS: Weta is doing the FX… Peter Jackson is not involved. Simon Kinberg is producing. Jackson is making The Hobbits!
6:28
