Deadline reports that Melissa McCarthy (Ghostbusters, The Heat) is closing a deal with New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment to star with Tiffany Haddish (If Loving You is Wrong, Keanu) in the upcoming crime drama movie The Kitchen.
The film is based on a 2014 comic series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle published in DC’s Vertigo line of comics. The screenplay is written by Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton, World Trade Center) who will also be making her debut in the director’s seat for the movie. Michael De Luca will serve as a producer under Michael De Luca Productions.
The Kitchen tells the story of the women who take over the Irish mafia in Hell’s Kitchen, New York in the ’70s after their husbands are arrested in an FBI operation. Under the control of these mob wives, organized crime in the Kitchen gets more dangerous.
The Deadline report also mentions that the movie will feature “three strong female leads,” so we should expect to see one more woman to be cast alongside McCarthy and Haddish in the future.
What do you think of this choice to cast McCarthy, known for her comedic roles, to play a dramatic lead? Which actress do you want to see round out the trio of leading ladies? Let us know in the comments.
