Netflix buys thriller Extinction from Universal, starring Michael Pena and Lizzy Caplan

Variety reports that Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights for the sci-fi thriller Extinction from Universal. The film was originally set to be released last month, but was pulled from Universal’s schedule just two months before its release date.

Extinction stars Michael Peña (Ant-Man) and Lizzy Caplan (Now You See Me 2) in the lead roles as husband and wife. Peña’s character has a recurring nightmare of losing his family and that bad dream becomes a reality when the planet is invaded by a force bent on destruction. Fighting for their lives, he comes to realize an unknown strength to keep his family safe from harm.

The film also stars Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Lilly Aspell (Wonder Woman), Emma Booth (Once Upon a Time), Israel Broussard (Happy Death Day), and Lex Shrapnel (Captain America: The First Avenger). Directed by Ben Young (Hounds of Love), Extinction was written by Spenser Cohen and Bradley Calen Kane. Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman from Mandeville Films produced the film, and Good Universe is acting as another production company for the project.

Extinction will be released on the streaming service later this year, Netflix confirmed.
