In 2015, it was announced that The Settlers of Catan, the hit board game, was headed to the big screen from producer Gail Katz (Pawn Sacrifice, The Perfect Storm) and her Gail Katz Productions banner. Now, Variety is reporting that Sony Pictures has acquired the rights to make the Catan movie as a potential franchise starter, with Dan Lin (IT, The LEGO Movie) and Jonathan Eirich (Death Note, Aladdin) joining Katz as producers. Blaise Hemingway of the upcoming Playmobil Movie and Ugly Dolls is writing the screenplay.
“We’re excited to be working with Sony to bring the iconic world of Catan to life,” Katz said. “As huge fans of the game, we’re struck by the endless possibilities of stories that it could inspire. It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to work in a world beloved by millions of people, and expand its story for the screen.”
Created by Klaus Teuber, the multiplayer strategy game sees players attempt to create the dominant community on the ever-changing fictional island of Catan. Settlers must outwit one another amidst fierce competition for the island’s scarce resources.
The Settlers of Catan is currently available in 38 languages and 50 countries around the world and has sold over 25 million board games.
