F. Gary Gray is in talks to direct New Line/Warner Bros.’ N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Written by Andrea Berloff, the movie is the story of the rise and fall of the Compton, California-based rap group. The members included Eazy-E, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, plus MC Ren and DJ Yella.
Another member, Arabian Prince, left N.W.A. before the group released the ground-breaking “Straight Outta Compton” album in 1988. The album, which featured the title track as well as “F*ck tha Police,” triggered sales of 9 million units.
Cube left the group in 1990 over royalty disputes, went solo and warred with the group via songs. Infighting occurred as well, but after Eazy-E’s AIDS-related death on March 26, 1995, all bad blood between the group ceased.
