Baby Driver’s Lily James has just joined the Mamma Mia sequel
Baby Driver and Cinderella star Lily James has just been cast in the upcoming Mamma Mia sequel, according to THR. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is the follow up to the 2008 adaptation of the stage play featuring the music of the band ABBA. The original film made $600 million worldwide and starred Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski and Colin Firth, all of whom are expected to be back for the Mama Mia sequel.
The Mamma Mia sequel was written by Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and will see the return of producers Judy Craymer from Littlestar and Gary Goetzman from Playtone and the creator and producer of the stage musical. Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA will return as executive producers and to add music and lyrics. The Mamma Mia sequel will feature ABBA songs that were not in the first film, though some will be reprised. James will play the role of ‘Young Donna.’ In the original film, the role of Donna was played by Streep. According to the site, the film will go “back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present.”
Lily James can currently be seen in Baby Driver, directed by Edgar Wright. She starred in the live-action Disney film Cinderella as well as the recent miniseries War & Peace. She also starred as Lady Rose MacClare in Downton Abbey. She’ll next be seen in the drama Darkest Hour with Gary Oldman, Guernsey and Little Woods.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! will hit theaters on July 20, 2018.
