The Conjuring cinematic universe continues to grow as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that a Crooked Man spinoff from The Conjuring 2 is in the works at Warner Bros. Pictures/New Line Cinema. Mike Van Waes, who sold a Wizard of Oz-themed horror pitch to New Line earlier this year, will pen the screenplay from a story by series mastermind James Wan.
The malevolent character, played to stuttering perfection by Javier Botet (Mama) in Conjuring 2, takes his name from an English nursery rhyme: “There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile. He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile. He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse, and they all lived together in a little crooked house.”
Crooked Man will be the third character to spinoff from the Conjuring series, following director Corin Hardy’s currently-shooting The Nun, starring Taissa Farmiga (We Have Always Lived in the Castle) and Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight), and the Annabelle films. The prequel film Annabelle: Creation hit theaters August 11, 2017. The Conjuring films and Annabelle have already earned a combined $895 million worldwide with a combined budget of just $66.5 million across the three films.
