Crowned Queen of Scotland when she was less than a year old, the 16th century leader was, later in life, forced to abdicate her throne and was executed at age 44 for her alleged involvement with an assassination attempt on the life of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, whose life story was told in Hirst’s screenplays for Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. In the latter film, Mary herself was played by Samantha Morton.
Originally scripted by Michael Hirst, Mary Queen of Scots will be directed by Josie Rourke. Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin are producing.
Margot Robbie had a busy 2016, starring on the big screen in Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, David Yates’ The Legend of Tarzan and in David Ayer‘s DC Comics ensemble Suicide Squad. She’s tentatively set to reprise the Harley Quinn role in Ayer’s upcoming Gotham City Sirens. Meanwhile, the actress is set to star opposite Sebastian Stan in the Tonya Harding biopic I, Tonya, Sony’s Beatrix Potter adaption, Peter Rabbit and Marian, an upcoming Sony Pictures film based on the legend of Robin Hood.
