Mary Magdalene, The Current War and Wind River added to the 2017 Weinstein slate
The Weinstein Company (TWC), which was behind the multi-Oscar-nominated film Lion, has added three additional films to their 2017 slate. First up is Mary Magdalene, the second film from Lion director Gareth Davis. The film stars Academy Award nominees Rooney Mara (Lion, Carol), Joaquin Phoenix (Her, The Master) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and will be released on November 24, 2017. The second is The Current War, which stars Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) as Thomas Edison and Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) as George Westinghouse. The film will open on December 22, 2017. The third is Wind River, which will mark Taylor Sheridan’s directorial debut. The film stars Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (American Hustle, The Hurt Locker) and Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) It is set to hit theaters August 4, 2017.
Mary Magdalene is described as “an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to the capital city of Jerusalem.” The film was written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslet.
The Current War is described as “the story of two powerful moguls battling over the supply of electricity in the late 1880s. Edison is on the verge of creating a marketable and sustainable electricity system for the first time in history, when Westinghouse notices a grand weakness in Edison’s design and ignites a war of currents between these two rivals.” The film will be directed by Alfonso Gomez‐Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) and also stars Katherine Waterston, Nicholas Hoult, Tom Holland, Matthew Macfayden and Tuppence Middleton.
Wind River is “a chilling thriller that follows a rookie FBI agent (Olsen) who teams up with a local game tracker with deep community ties and a haunted past (Renner) to investigate the murder of a local girl on a remote Native American Reservation in the hopes of solving the her mysterious death.” The film is written and directed by Sheridan and also stars Gil Birmingham, Jon Bernthal, Julia Jones, Kelsey Asbille, and James Jordan.
