Before writer/director Damien Chazelle‘s Academy Award-winning (Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Supporting Actor) film Whiplash in 2014 and his recent winner (Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song and Best Production Design) La La Land, he had a script on the Black List (the industry list of the best unmade films). That script was called The Claim and according to THR, Motion Picture Capital and Route One will produce the film.
The Claim is the story of a single father who has a criminal past. He learns about the whereabouts of his daughter who has been kidnapped, “while fighting the mysterious claims of another couple who insist that the child is theirs.” The film is set to be released sometime in 2018.
There is no word yet on whether or not Chazelle will direct. Chazelle wrote and directed the short film Whiplash in 2013 after that script made the Black List. He then went on to write the full-length version and direct the film, which starred Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons and Paul Reiser. In addition to its wins, Whiplash was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. This past year he wrote and directed La La Land, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. It received a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations. It was also famously announced as the winner of Best Picture, due to the wrong envelope being given to announcer Warren Beatty. The envelope was a duplicate of the one announcing Emma Stone’s Best Actress win. Moonlight actually won Best Picture for 2016.
