New Trailer for The Little Mermaid, But Not the One From Disney

There’s a new The Little Mermaid movie trailer, but not the one from Disney

There is a new trailer out for the upcoming live-action film The Little Mermaid, but it’s not the one you’re thinking. As you may know, there is a film version of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale based on the 1989 Disney animated film in development with Hamilton and Moana‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda. This version you see below stars Shirley MacLaine (Terms of Endearment), Poppy Drayton (Downton Abbey), William Moseley (The Chronicles of Narnia), Loreto Peralta (Instructions Not Included) and Gina Gershon (Empire).

The film is a take on the 1837 fairy tale that we’re all familiar with. A mermaid is being controlled by someone who has a part of her. In this film, it’s her soul, and in the animated film, it’s her voice. In this story, a young reporter (Moseley) is sent to a small town in Mississippi to investigate a story about a woman who is really a mermaid. His younger sister (Peralta) meets the mermaid (Drayton), who tells her there is a legend among her people about a little girl who is blessed with the soul of a mermaid.

The film is directed by Blake Harris and Chris Bouchard and the script was written by Harris. Bouchard did visual effects for the film Gravity and directed Hackney’s Finest. Harris wrote 12 Dates of Christmas. The Little Mermaid is set to be released sometime this summer. The original story of The Little Mermaid (who’s ending is often debated) has had a number of adaptations in addition to the animated classic. There has been an opera, ballets, books, comic books, manga, songs and TV shows about the sea creature.

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Do you like this version of the fairy tale? Are you excited for the Disney version? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or tweet us @ComingSoonnet.
