Carey Mulligan and Gary Ross Plan Outback

Carey Mulligan and Gary Ross are teaming for a science fiction project called Outback, Variety reports.

No plot details are currently available, but the project is said to take place in the Australian outback and will be developed through GK Films (with Graham King, Tobey Maguire and Ross himself producing). The script is being written by Nissar Modi with a story from both he and Ross. Modi has not yet had a screenplay produced, but did land a spot on the 2009 “Black List” of unproduced screenplays with his adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s sci-fi novel Z For Zachariah.

Mulligan, who next appears in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive and Steve McQueen’s Shame, will soon go into production on Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (also produced by Maguire).

Outback will mark Ms. Mulligan’s third foray into science fiction, following last year’s Never Let Me Go and one of her first appearances in a fan-favorite episode of “Doctor Who” entitled “Blink.”
