Sony’s Rival Mulan Movie Snags Game of Thrones Director

With Walt Disney Pictures having already announced a November 12, 2018 release date for their live-action Mulan film, another studio is looking to start a good-old-fashioned movie rivalry. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Sony Pictures has hired Game of Thrones director Alex Graves to helm their own Mulan movie as an international/Chinese co-production.

Like Disney’s animated Mulan released in 1998, Sony’s rival version will adapt the ancient Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a female warrior who disguises herself as a man in order to take the place of her aging father in the military.

Disney is still on the lookout for a director on their own version, with Ang Lee reportedly already having turned the gig down.

Mirror Mirror screenwriter Jason Keller is currently writing the script for the Sony Mulan movie, with Doug Belgrad serving as producer/co-financier with his 2.0 Entertainment.
