Despite the release of four new movies nationwide covering a wide range of genres and demographics, Universal Pictures’ hit family film Hop remained on top with $21.7 million and $68.1 million after ten days.
Russell Brand, the voice of the Easter Bunny’s son in the weekend’s #1 movie, also starred in the comedy remake of Arthur (Warner Bros.) along with Helen Mirren, which settled for opening in second place with a moderate $12.6 million in 3,276 theaters.
It was followed closely by Joe Wright’s action-thriller Hanna (Focus Features), starring Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett, which brought in an impressive $12.3 million in 2,535 theaters, defying most expectations.
Another impressive debut was the real-life drama of Soul Surfer (FilmDistrict), starring AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt, which took in $11.1 million in 2,214 theaters, the lowest number of the four new wide releases, but ending up with an average of roughly $5,000 per theater, the best of the new movies.
James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s horror movie Insidious (FilmDistrict) had a great hold in its second, dropping just 27% to gross $9.7 million in its second weekend and $27 million after ten days.
Thought to have the potential to be in the Top 3, David Gordon Green’s star-studded medieval comedy Your Highness (Universal), starring Danny McBride, James Franco and Natalie Portman, ended up opening in sixth place with a disappointing $9.5 million.
Duncan Jones’ sci-fi thriller Source Code (Summit), starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan, took seventh place with $9.1 million and $28.6 million after ten days. That was followed by another sci-fi thriller, Limitless (Relativity Media), starring Bradley Cooper, which added $5.7 million in its fourth weekend to bring its grand total to $64.4 million.
The Fox family sequel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules took ninth place with $4.9 million and $45.5 million in three weekends, just below where the original movie was at that time in its run.
Rounding out the top 10 was the Matthew McConaughey crime drama The Lincoln Lawyer (Lionsgate) with 4.6 million and an impressive $46.4 million after four weeks.
Internationally, 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ animated Rio debuted this weekend with an estimated $55 million from 72 countries. The movie, featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, George Lopez, Tracy Morgan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann, will.i.am and Jamie Foxx, opens in North American theaters this Friday.
