20th Century Fox sequel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules opened in the top spot with an estimated $24.4 million from 3,167 theaters. Made for about $18 million, the family comedy based on the children’s books by Jeff Kinney averaged $7,704 per theater. A year ago, Diary of a Wimpy Kid opened to $22.1 million and went on to earn $64 million at the domestic box office. Directed by David Bowers, “Rodrick Rules” stars Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Rachael Harris, Devon Bostick and Steve Zahn.
Zack Snyder’s fantasy action film Sucker Punch debuted in second place with $19 million from 3,033 theaters. The Warner Bros. release, which cost $75 million to make, stars Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm, Oscar Isaac and Scott Glenn. $4 million (21%) of the total gross came from the 229 IMAX screens the film is playing on. Sucker Punch also earned $7.4 million from 23 international markets this weekend.
Bradley Cooper-starrer Limitless dropped just 19% in ticket sales and to third place. Relativity’s $27 million thriller added $15.2 million for a two-week total of $41.3 million.
Lionsgate’s The Lincoln Lawyer remained in fourth place with $11 million, a drop of only 17% from last weekend. Starring Matthew McConaughey, the crime drama has collected $28.97 million after two weeks in theaters. It cost $40 million to make.
Paramount’s Rango rounded out the top five and surpassed the $100 million mark. The Gore Verbinski-directed film, made for $135 million, brought in $9.8 million its fourth weekend for a total of $106.4 million domestically so far. Voiced by Johnny Depp, the film added $15.5 million overseas and has a foreign total of $94 million.
Sixth place belong to Sony’s Battle: Los Angeles, which added $7.6 million its third weekend for a total of $72.6 million. “Battle” topped the international box office with $16.2 million from 55 markets. The $70 million film has made $79.5 million overseas.
In its second weekend in North American theaters, Paul dropped two spots to seventh and earned $7.5 million for a domestic total of $24.6 million. Starring Nick Frost, Simon Pegg and the voice of Seth Rogen, the alien comedy was produced for $40 million.
In limited release, Julian Schnabel’s Miral earned $65,000 from four theaters, an average of $16,250 per screen.
