Variety reports that Oscar-winning The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper is in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of the musical “Les Miserables” for Universal Pictures.
The musical is based on the Victor Hugo novel, which focuses on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption.
Cameron Mackintosh, who produced the musical’s original British stage run, will produce along with Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush, Uma Thurman and Claire Danes starred in a previous feature adaptation in 1998, but the film earned only $14.1 million in theaters.
