The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) have announced the nominations for their 16th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards, which will air live on VH1 on Friday, January 14 at 9 p.m. Eastern, and director Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan has scored a record 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress (Natalie Portman), Supporting Actress (Mila Kunis), Director, Original Screenplay and 7 technical awards.
Other strong showings for the critics group’s nominations are Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech and Joel and Ethan Coen’s readapation of True Grit, which each received 11 nominations each. The BFCA pride themselves on how closely their picks match up with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ (AMPAS) picks for their Academy Awards each year and with six choices in most of the major categories, there’s a good chance that we’re looking at the frontrunners to receiving Oscar nominations in January.
The acting categories offer some interesting choices including first-time actresses Jennifer Lawrence for Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone and Hailee Stanfield for True Grit, as well as Swedish actress Noomi Rapace for her performance in the foreign thriller The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo (which is currently being adapted in English by another BFCA nominee, David Fincher).
Fincher’s The Social Network, which swept the critics awards over the weekend, received 9 nominations including acting nods for Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, while Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours received eight.
