Arnold Schwarzenegger will join Cobie Smulders and Taran Killam for the action comedy Why We’re Killing Gunther
Arnold Schwarzenegger is prepping a return to comedy today as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the former Governor of California has signed on for a project called Why We’re Killing Gunther. An action comedy, Why We’re Killing Gunther is written by Saturday Night Live‘s Taran Killam, who also plans to make his directorial debut with the project. What’s more, Killam will also star alongside his real-life wife, Cobie Smulders (The Avengers, How I Met Your Mother).
Why We’re Killing Gunther is said to follow Gunther, “the world’s greatest hitman,” who comes under friendly fire when a group of international assassins decides that he’s too much of a braggart for his own good and that they’ll off him once and for all. As they pursue him, however, they find that Gunther’s “world’s greatest hitman” title is not an undeserved one and that the master assassin is ahead of them every step of the way.
Why We’re Killing Gunther will also star Paul Brittain (Hotel Transylvania 2, Saturday Night Live), Ryan Gaul (Identity Thief, House of Lies), Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live, Sisters), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates) and Randall Park (The Interview, Fresh Off the Boat).
Although Arnold Schwarzenegger has brought comedic elements to recent performances (such as his recurring role in The Expendables franchise), his last full on comedy feature was 1996’s Jingle All the Way. For a few years, Schwarzenegger has also been expressing an interest in developing a sequel to Ivan Reitman’s Twins, tentatively titled Triplets.
Killam will also produce alongside Kim Leadford, Ash Sarohia and Steve Squillante with production on Why We’re Killing Gunther tentatively set to begin production this June.
