Doug Liman has become the frontrunner to direct All You Need is Kill for Warner Bros. Pictures, reports Heat Vision. The film will be based on the Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka which is described as follows:
There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again… When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the B*tch of War. Is the B*tch the key to Keiji’s escape, or to his final death?
Liman directing “Kill” would cause a problem for WB’s The Three Musketeers, which the studio and helmer were planning on starting this fall. Another thing that project has against it is that Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers 3D already has a release date of April 15, 2011.
The trade says that “Kill” has a ticking clock attached to it as part of the original deal the studio made for Dante Harper’s spec adaptation of Sakurazaka’s novel. That deal closed more than two months ago, which means the film may have to be shooting by next spring.
