Last week, ComingSoon.net spoke to The Sorcerer’s Apprentice director Jon Turteltaub to get a progress report on National Treasure 3, which you can read here, and now here’s a report from an interview ComingSoon.net did with the writers on the planned three-quel:
After wrapping work on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, screenwriters Doug Miro and Carlos Bernard are neck-deep in figuring out the requisite Byzantine plot twists of National Treasure 3, and while they’re keeping the details as clandestine as the Book of Secrets, Miro did offer a glimpse of the process behind their approach during a chat with ComingSoon.net.
CS: Where are you in the work and what can you say at this point about your script for “National Treasure 3”?
Miro: We’re working on it now. We can’t say that much. We have a draft and we’re working on a draft and it’s a very, very involved process, obviously, because there are a lot of people involved who know the franchise very well. And also because the stories are very complicated and it’s really a lot of moving pieces to put together: the mystery and the way the clues work and the treasure, and all the characters now who you want to see in the movie and make sure they have enough of a place in the movie. You want to take the audience to all these great places, so there’s a lot that need to be going on and be done. So we’re still working through all that. I guess the most we can say is that there’s definitely a treasure in it.
CS: Is it picking up dangling threads from the most recent film or is it starting fresh on its own?
Miro: Our hope is that if you remember that bit at the end of the last one, we’re trying to pick up from that. We’ll see how it works, because it’s tricky. It’s a tricky one, what’s on Page 47 [of The Book of Secrets], but we’re trying to pick up from there.
