Heat Vision is reporting that Sofia Vergara has joined the cast of Sony’s The Smurfs. The trade says the “Modern Family” star “will portray Odile, a powerful executive at a high-end French cosmetics company who is married to the live-action character played by Neil Patrick Harris.”
Entertainment Weekly has previously said that “Glee” star Jayma Mays “will play the pregnant wife to Neil Patrick Harris’ character,” so we’ll have to sort out who exactly is playing who. Either way, Mays is definitely in the film as well along with Hank Azaria, Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Katy Perry and Alan Cumming.
Directed by Raja Gosnell, the big screen adaptation is scheduled for an August 3, 2011 release. Filming will start in New York next week.
In related news, Vergara has also landed a voice role in George Miller’s Happy Feet 2, which Miller is filming in Sydney for a November 18, 2011 release.
She joins Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brad Pitt and her “Smurfs” co-star Azaria in the Warner Bros. sequel.
