Back in August, word came that a return trip to 1870s South Dakota was in the cards for the cast and crew of HBO’s unfairly-cancelled cult western series Deadwood. Now HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has confirmed to TVLine that series creator David Milch is all set for a Deadwood movie to hopefully wrap up all the loose ends.
“David has our commitment that we are going to do it,” says Lombardo. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen. The understanding is that when he is done with [his current project] he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the ‘Deadwood’ film.”
Once the cable network cancelled the show after a mere three 12-episode seasons, Milch’s original plan was to make two Deadwood movies and create a proper ending for the rivalry between Sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and foul-mouthed pimp Al Swearengen (Ian McShane). Now it seems the only thing potentially standing in the way is Milch trying to corral all those busy actors back in the saddle.
“I’m going to leave that in David’s hands,” Lombardo saiad. “He’s confident he will be able to. The cast is unbelievably [tight]. Some casts and creators form a bond that becomes relevant for the rest of their lives. This was a defining moment for a lot of them.”
Other cast members who may return for the Deadwood movie include Molly Parker, Jim Beaver, W. Earl Brown, Dayton Callie, Kim Dickens, Dora DuFran, Brad Dourif, Anna Gunn, John Hawkes and Jeffrey Jones.
