Trainspotting 2 Returning Cast Confirmed with 2017 Release Planned

Trainspotting 2 is moving forward with Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle

TriStar Pictures announced today that is has acquired worldwide rights to Danny Boyle’s much-anticipated sequel to Trainspotting. Still without an official title, Trainspotting 2 is based on characters created by Irvine Welsh. It will reunite director Danny Boyle with screenwriter John Hodge and all of the principal cast of the 1996 film—Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle will reprise the iconic roles of Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie.

Producers on Trainspotting 2 are Andrew Macdonald, Danny Boyle, Christian Colson, and Bernie Bellew through Figment Films, Decibel Films, and Cloud Eight Films. Film4 is also a production entity. Shooting will begin in late spring 2016 with plans for the film to be released in 2017 to mark the 21st birthday of the original film.

“It’s been 20 years since we met these characters and John Hodge’s screenplay brilliantly explores what’s happened to them—and to us—in the intervening years,” says Boyle. “We are grateful to Tom and Hannah for their support and we can’t wait to get going.”

“‘Trainspotting’ was a seminal movie for me,” says Tristar’s Hannah Minghella. “Like almost everyone my age, I had the ‘Choose Life’ poster on my university dorm room wall. I have wanted to work with Danny ever since, so the opportunity to collaborate on the sequel is truly a dream come true. It perfectly represents the filmmaker-driven movies I am committed to making at TriStar.”

ComingSoon.net recently sat down with Danny Boyle to discuss his latest big screen release, Steve Jobs. You can check out that full interview (which includes talk about Trainspotting 2) by clicking here.
