Batman v Superman & Gotham to Credit Original Co-Creator Bill Finger

Batman co-creator Bill Finger to be acknowledged by Batman v Superman and more

Fans are hotly-anticipating the release next year of Zack Snyder’s blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but one of the biggest injustices in comics history has been the lack of acknowledgment to writer/artist/designer Bill Finger’s contribution to the creation of Batman and his mythos, including the characters of Robin, Catwoman and the Joker, as well as the alternate identity of Bruce Wayne and the Gotham City/Batcave settings. According to The Hollywood Reporter that’s all about to change, as DC Entertainment will now be giving him due official credit for his work in film and television projects based on his creations, including Batman v Superman and the TV show “Gotham.”

Finger, who was also involved in co-creating Green Lantern, passed away in 1974. Due to a contract Bob Kane signed with DC Comics in 1939 which gave him sole official credit for the character, Finger’s involvement went unknown to the general public until Kane acknowledged him in a 1989 autobiography. In the years since, DC Comics has begun crediting Finger in the comics and reprints, and now the screen work will reflect that as well.

Here is the official press release:

DC Entertainment and the family of Bill Finger are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement that recognizes Mr. Finger’s significant contributions to the Batman family of characters. “Bill Finger was instrumental in developing many of the key creative elements that enrich the Batman universe, and we look forward to building on our acknowledgement of his significant role in DC Comics’ history,” stated Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment. “As part of our acknowledgement of those contributions,” Nelson continued, “we are pleased to confirm today that Bill Finger will be receiving credit in the Warner Bros. television series Gotham beginning later this season, and in the forthcoming motion picture Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

One of Finger’s other major contributions to the Batman legacy was the creation of the Batmobile, perhaps the most beloved and recognized car in superhero history, and today Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood announced that fans can enter for a chance to win a special tour where they can actually sit in Ben Affleck’s new Batmobile from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice!
