The new Melissa McCarthy comedy, formerly titled Michelle Darnell, will now see release as The Boss
Universal Pictures’ upcoming comedy starring Melissa McCarthy has a new titled. Formerly known as Michelle Darnell, the feature will now see release as The Boss. The Boss will retain the planned April 8, 2016 release date.
The Boss stars the Academy Award-nominated McCarthy (Bridesmaids, The Heat) as a titan of industry who is sent to prison after she’s caught for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget. McCarthy is joined in The Boss by a cast that includes Kristen Bell (“Veronica Mars,” Frozen), Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones,” Pixels), Kathy Bates (Tammy, “American Horror Story”) and Cecily Strong (“SNL”).
Based on an original character created by McCarthy, The Boss will be directed by Ben Falcone (Tammy) and is written by McCarthy and Falcone alongside their Groundlings collaborator, Steve Mallory. The Boss is produced by McCarthy and Falcone through their On the Day productions and Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy through their Gary Sanchez Productions.
McCarthy, who continues to headline her hit CBS series “Mike and Molly” opposite Billy Gardell, starred earlier this year in writer and director Paul Feig’s Spy opposite Rose Byrne, Jason Statham, Jude Law, Miranda Hart, Allison Janney and Bobby Cannavale. The 20th Century Fox release was a sizable hit, pulling in both critical acclaim and more than $236 million at the worldwide box office. McCarthy is currently reteaming with Feige as they shoot the new Ghostbusters movie with a cast that also includes Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth, Andy Garcia and Michael K. Williams. Look for it to hit theaters July 15, 2016, just a few months after The Boss.
