Another trip to the convent with Disney’s Sister Act series is in the works as the Mouse House has hired screenwriters Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah (10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde) to take on a remake of the popular comedy. Allison Shearmur (March’s Cinderella) will produce.
The original film starred Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg as entertainer Deloris Van Cartier, who goes into hiding with a group of nuns in a San Francisco convent after she runs afoul with the mob. The film earned more than $231 million at the box office in 1992 and led to a sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.
A Broadway musical later followed, with Disney vet Alan Menken writing the music. The stage show netted 5 Tony nominations in 2011, including Best Musical.
There’s no word if Goldberg will be involved in the new film. [THR]
