The fall movie season is underway as Warner Bros. has drowned us in marketing for Prisoners and I’ve seen stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman on consecutive nights of “The Daily Show”. Looking over predictions, Laremy is a little more bullish on the well-reviewed, dark thriller’s chances with the readers going $800,000 below his $20.5 million prediction. Is this a film the women will stay clear of, will that prevent it from going too high?
The weekend’s other new wide release is the silly looking Battle of the Year 3D, which is currently sporting an impressive 8% rating over at RottenTomatoes. No surprise there, but will this one be able to find any traction with fans of films such as Stomp the Yard and the Step Up franchise? With 2,008 theaters it seems Screen Gems isn’t sure and once again the reader aggregate goes below Laremy’s prediction of $7.2 million, $1.1 million below in fact.
Readers are a little higher than Laremy on the two limited releases we predicted this weekend, those being the 3D IMAX re-release of The Wizard of Oz, arriving in 318 theaters and the five theater release of Rush before it goes wide next weekend.
The interesting one here is the reader prediction for Rush as the aggregate prediction of $548,000 works out to a $109,600 per theater average, which would be enough for a top fifteen ranking in terms of all-time per theater averages.
I’ve included Laremy’s predictions and the average reader predictions directly below and I’ll be back on Sunday with box office estimates. To see Laremy’s full list of predictions and all 102 reader predictions for this weekend click here.
