Top 50 Most Anticipated Movies of 2013: Part One – #41-50

#44

Mad Max: Fury Road

TBA

Make no mistake, my interest here lies 100% in the fact Tom Hardy is starring. I’m not the fan of the Mad Max franchise so many others are and George Miller is hardly a director I have confidence in. But the fact Miller, Hardy and Warner Bros. stuck with this return to the franchise for so long has me curious. So many of these post-apocalyptic films end up being the same that I’m hoping this will prove to be something different.

The story is said to take place a short while after 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome with Max (Hardy) presumably protecting a group of women dubbed the “Five Wives” from the bad guys. Along with Hardy, the film co-stars Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Zoë Kravitz and Riley Keough.

Inside Llewyn Davis

TBA

It’s hard not to anticipate any film from the Coen brothers, but the fact Inside Llewyn Davis is still without a distributor makes me wonder just what exactly is the hold-up. It’s already been rated by the MPAA so I know it’s finished, and yet it isn’t playing Sundance, which makes me wonder if they’re waiting to show it in Cannes. IMDb lists a few foreign release dates (along with an erroneous domestic date), however, and Cannes isn’t going to show it if it’s already been released elsewhere.

Starring the likes of Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake, the film certainly has name credibility next to the Coens so what the hold up may be, I don’t know.

#42

Diana

TBA

If Naomi Watts is ever going to be a strong contender for a Best Actress Oscar, this has to be the role. Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall), Diana focuses on the final two years of the late Princess of Wales and as such could very easily be a powerful and emotional film.

Diana is currently without a distributor, but a Cannes premiere seems highly likely.

Anchorman: The Legend Continues

December 20

Anchorman: The Legend Continues is the first of only a couple comedies on my most anticipated list as I am typically uninterested in the broader comedies studios tend to offer, which is why you won’t see The Hangover Part III, The Heat or Identity Thief in my top 50.

Of the studio comedies coming out this year, Anchorman seems like the most likely to make me laugh even though I’m not the rabid fan of the first film that most seem to be. It does, however, have some top quality moments and lines that have proven to remain funny eight years later, which is no easy task.

That does it for this first batch of ten films. Tomorrow I’ll deliver numbers 31-40 as I count down my Top 50 Most Anticipated Movies of 2013 all week long.
