Despite a decline of about 60% in ticket sales, Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail was able to hold off Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience to repeat a first place finish at the weekend box office. The Lionsgate comedy added $16.5 million in its second weekend to bring the film’s total to $64.9 million, making it the highest-grossing feature for Tyler Perry to date.
Disney’s “Jonas Brothers” film didn’t live up to expectations, as the release earned $12.7 million from 1,271 locations and had to settle for second place. Many had expected the movie to open with twice as many ticket sales.
Enjoying a big Oscars bounce, Fox Searchlight’s Slumdog Millionaire almost beat the Jonas Brothers as well. In third place, Danny Boyle’s award-winning drama earned another $12.2 million in its 16th(!!) weekend in theaters. The film, which was made for just $15 million, has now collected $115.1 million at the domestic box office. Slumdog Millionaire has earned another $75 million internationally and $190.1 million worldwide.
20th Century Fox’s Taken, starring Liam Neeson, continued to impress in its fifth weekend. The action-thriller dipped just 11.8% in ticket sales and added $9.95 million for a total of $107.9 million.
New Line/Warner Bros.’ He’s Just Not That Into You rounded out the top five with $5.9 million. In four weeks, the romantic comedy has made $78.5 million.
Fox’s new video game adaptation Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li didn’t attract many moviegoers. The film opened in 1,136 theaters and earned an estimated $4.7 million in eighth place.
In limited release, Wayne Kramer’s Crossing Over earned $75,600 from 9 theaters. The drama averaged $8,400 per location.
