Phillip Noyce’s name has come up a lot recently with talks of a new Jack Ryan film, Edwin A. Salt with Tom Cruise and so on. But since Catch a Fire he hasn’y started work on anything, but it seems the big Aussie is nearing a deal, at least you would think so with how much he has been talked about as of late.
The newest project Noyce has been attached to is a remake of Captain Blood, a 1935 Errol Flynn film in which Flynn stars as Peter Blood, a 17th-century physician turned slave turned pirate. The film marked the first time Flynn and Olivia de Havilland were seen on screen together when, at the time, the two were no-names in Hollywood.
Noyce is only aboard to help develop the project for Warner Bros., but the Variety article on the subject says he has an “eye toward directing.”
Captain Blood is actually one of my favorite Flynn films, right up there with Sea Hawk and, of course, Robin Hood. Captain Blood was directed by Michael Curtiz and was ultimately nominated for the best picture Oscar and instantly began Errol Flynn’s career.
The idea to remake the feature must have something to do with trying to keep the pirate themed features alive as it appears Warners wants a piece of that pie.
