With how shitty Pathfinder was it surprises me a little that anyone would want to dare touch a Viking based film, but writer-director Menno Meyjes intends to do just that and he has established an impressive cast to start production with.
The film is called Last Battle Dreamer and Meyjes has cast Ryan Phillippe, Abbie Cornish and Sean Bean with Phillippe starring as a seventh-century Viking warrior named Thorfinn who, along with his older brother, the battle-scarred Hakon (Bean), invades Britain.
Okay, I just read that line with you and major red flags started waving. Phillippe as a Viking? Hmmm, is it because he is so … Damn, I can’t think of any reason why he would have cast him. Let’s dig a little deeper.
Meyjes describes Dreamer as “a love story written in fire and blood.”
Okay, so maybe big burly men and haggard looking women falling in love over raw meat isn’t the picture they wanted to portray, but when I think of Vikings I don’t think of Phillippe or Australian hottie, and rumored Bond girl, Cornish. The one thing Pathfinder did get right was the look of the Vikings and they were led by Clancy Brown who bears no resemblance to Phillppe in any way, shape or form.
Dreamer is expected to begin production later this year. We’ll have to wait and see how it all ends up.
