Disney/Walden’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian knocked Iron Man out of the top spot with an estimated $56.6 million from 3,929 theaters for an average of $14,398 per location. The sequel took in less in its opening weekend than “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe,” which earned $65.6 million in North America in December of 2005. The Andrew Adamson-directed film also collected $20.7 million internationally over the weekend. The first “Narnia” film made $745 million worldwide over its threatrical run.
Despite dropping to second place, Marvel Studios’ Iron Man added an impressive $31.2 million in its third weekend to push its total to $222.5 million domestically. The Paramount release also collected another $25.6 million internationally, bringing its overseas tally to $206 million and worldwide total to $428 million. Directed by Jon Favreau, the Robert Downey Jr. starrer was made for $140 million.
Third place belonged to Fox’s What Happens in Vegas, starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. Budgeted for $35 million, the comedy earned $13.9 million and is up to $40.3 million after two weeks.
The Wachowski Brothers’ Speed Racer lost a hefty 58.8% of its first weekend ticket sales. The Warner Bros. release collected $7.6 million in fourth and has made just $24.4 million compared to its budget of $120 million.
Universal’s Baby Mama rounded out the top five with $4.593 million for a four-week total of $47.3 million, followed closely by Sony’s Made of Honor, which earned $4.5 million and is at $33.7 million after three weeks.
