It’s been nearly five years since Walt Disney Pictures first announced plans for a live-action comedy, Tink, set to follow the adventures of Peter Pan‘s mischievous fairy, Tinker Bell. Although Pitch Perfect 2 star and director Elizabeth Banks was originally attached to headline the project, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that the very small role has gone to Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon. Finding Dory‘s Victoria Strouse, meanwhile, is attached to provide the screenplay.
Created by J.M. Barrie for 1904’s “Peter Pan,” Tink, quite likely the world’s most famous fairy, was originally played onstage by nothing more than a miniature spotlight. She’s best known today, however, for the animated Disney version, who first appeared in the studio’s 1953 feature Peter Pan. Lately, Tink has been the focus of her own direct-to-DVD animated franchise with the latest adventure, Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast having been released earlier this year.
Tink is one of two different big screen Tinker Bell movies in the works. It was announced last fall that Night at the Museum‘s Shawn Levy is developing a still-untitled live-action comedy that will star Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy as the sprite.
Witherspoon will also produce Tink alongside Bruna Papandrea.
