Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist Boards Lowriders

Melissa Benoist, already well known for her upcoming role as CBS’ “Supergirl,'” has lined up a new big screen project in the form of Universal Pictures’ Lowriders. According to a story today at Deadline, Benoist will play the role of a woman named Lorelai in a story that explores the underground world of lowrider cars and street tagging. Both Lily Collins and Nicola Peltz had been previously attached to the role.

Lowriders will also star Demian Bichir, Eva Longoria, Tony Revolori, Gabriel Chavarria, Theo Rossi and Yvette Monreal. Featuring a screenplay by Cheo Hodari Coker, Elgin James, Josh Bierne-Gordon and Justin Tipping, Lowriders offers a contemporary tale about a teen whose loyalties are tested when an annual lowrider event forces him to choose between his father (Bichir) and his criminal uncle.

Set up through Blumhouse Productions, Imagine Entertainment and Universal Pictures, Lowriders marks the directorial debut of de Montreuil, best known for his short sci-fi thriller, The Raven. You can check that film out in its entirety right here.

In addition to the upcoming DC Comics series, Benoist has starred in films like Danny Collins, Whiplash and The Longest Ride.

Jason Blum and Brian Grazer will executive produce Lowriders with Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol executive producing. Couper Samuleson will oversee for Blumhouse with Alexandre Dauman doing the same for Imagine.
