Screen Gems’ new horror remake Prom Night opened better than expected, earning an estimated $22.7 million from 2,700 theaters, an average of $8,407 per location. The Nelson McCormick-directed pic, starring Brittany Snow, is the 12th highest April debut ever, coming in just behind Denzel Washington’s Man on Fire ($22.75).
Fox Searchlight Pictures’ crime-drama Street Kings, starring Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie and Chris Evans, debuted in second place with $12 million from 2,467 theaters. Directed by David Ayer, the film averaged $4,864 per site.
Champ of the last two weekends, Sony’s 21 dropped to third but still only 28.3% in ticket sales. The blackjack drama added $11 million in its third weekend and has collected $62.3 million so far. The film, with Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Laurence Fishburne and Kevin Spacey, cost about $35 million to make.
Likewise, Nim’s Island performed well its second weekend, dipping just 31.9% to make $9 million in fourth. Starring Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslin and Gerard Butler, Fox Walden’s fantasy-adventure has earned $25.3 million total and was budgeted at $37 million.
On the other hand, Universal’s Leatherheads took a 51.1% tumble in its second weekend. Directed by and starring George Clooney, as well as Renée Zellwegger and John Krasinski, the comedy garnered $6.2 million for a total of $21.9 million. The film carried a budget of about $58 million.
Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who, from Fox, earned $6 million this weekend in sixth place and has made $139.6 million in five weeks. The big screen adaptation cost $85 million to make and is the highest-grossing movie of the year so far.
Opening in 1,106 theaters, Miramax dramedy Smart People earned $4.2 million, an average of $3,797 per location. Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Page and Thomas Haden Church star in the Noam Murro-directed film.
DreamWorks/Paramount’s The Ruins took a big hit its second weekend, dropping $59.4% in sales and to eighth place. The horror-thriller made $3.3 million and has collected $13.4 million.
Both opening in just four theaters, Thomas McCarthy’s The Visitor, starring Richard Jenkins, earned $88,000, and Young@Heart made $63,600.
