The action-adventure story centers on real-life bootlegger Bill McCoy, who ran rum during the United States’ Prohibition era, despite himself being a teetotaler. McCoy’s practice of smuggling alcohol from the Bahamas clean, uncut and without mob involvement may have inspired the famous idiom “the real McCoy.” This project is not to be confused with the 1993 Kim Basinger/Val Kilmer bomb, also titled The Real McCoy.
Tom McNulty (The Spectacular Now) conceived of the idea for The Real McCoy and will produce alongside Michael De Luca (Fifty Shades of Grey). No director is attached yet.
This will be the latest in a flurry of projects Pratt has become attached to since his success with Guardians of the Galaxy, including Universal’s comic book adaptation Cowboy Ninja Viking, Sony’s western remake The Magnificent Seven and the long-gestating sci-fi film Passengers. There’s also the rumors of him taking on the Indiana Jones and Ghostbusters franchises, not to mention returning as Star Lord for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
