Based on Lissa Evans’ 2009 novel, Their Finest Hour and a Half will follow a British movie crew trying to make a patriotic film to boost morale after the Blitz during World War II, only for a battle of the sexes to ensue.
Claflin was attached last October along with Cinderella actress Lily James, who appears to no longer be in the cards. The film, which will shoot this summer, is produced by Stephen Woolley and Amanda Posey for BBC Films and HanWay, with British TV vet Gaby Chiappe (“EastEnders”) penning the script.
“Gaby Chiappe’s skillful adaptation of Lissa Evans’s brilliantly comic and moving wartime novel is a stunning film debut,” said BBC Films’ head Christine Langan.
“’Their Finest Hour and a Half’ is a funny and touching romance with a great female lead role that is entertaining and emotional in equal measure,” added Hanway MD Thorsten Schumacher.
Arterton will next co-star with Idris Elba in A Hundred Streets, Claflin with Emilia Clarke in Me Before You, and Nighy with Catherine Zeta-Jones in Oliver Parker’s Dad’s Army.
